Wegmans Ground Beef Recalled for Possible Plastic Pieces

J & G Foods Inc. of Sutton, MA, is recalling approximately 33,948 pounds of ground beef products that may be contaminated with plastic materials, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced Wednesday. The ground beef products were produced on Dec. 23, 2014.

The following products are subject to recall:

  • 1-lb. vacuum-sealed packages of “Wegmans Organic 93% Lean/7% Fat Grass-Fed Ground Beef.”

  • 3-pack containing three 1-lb packages of “Wegmans Organic 93% Lean/7% Fat Grass-Fed Ground Beef.”

The products subject to recall bear the establishment number “EST. 8466” inside the USDA mark of inspection and “USE OR FREEZE BY 01/16/15”. These products produced were shipped to retail locations in Massachusetts, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

The problem was discovered after the J & G Foods received consumer complaints through retail establishments that the product contained small malleable plastic pieces. According to Wegmans, the recalled products “may contain small strips of translucent, flexible plastic.”

FSIS and J & G Foods have received no reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products. Anyone concerned about an injury or illness should contact a healthcare provider.

FSIS routinely conducts recall effectiveness checks to verify recalling firms notify their customers of the recall and that steps are taken to make certain that the product is no longer available to consumers.

Consumers with questions about the recall can contact Edward R. Briggs, J & G Foods Quality Assurance Manager, (508) 865-1101.
