Clostridium perfringens is a type of bacteria that can be found in a variety of foods, particularly meats, meat products, and gravy. Emetic toxins produced by Clostridium perfringens bacteria are characterized by intense abdominal cramps and diarrhea which begin 8-22 hours after consumption of foods containing large numbers of those Clostridium perfringens bacteria capable of producing the toxin. The illness is usually over within 24 hours but less severe symptoms may persist in some individuals for 1 or 2 weeks.

Bacillus cereus is a type of bacteria that can be found in a variety of foods that has been stored too long at room temperature. Emetic toxins produced by Bacillus cereus are characterized by nausea and vomiting occurring within 30 minutes to six hours after consumption of contaminated foods.

Clostridium botulinum is a type of bacteria found in improperly canned foods, garlic in oil, vacuum-packed and tightly wrapped food. These bacteria produce a nerve toxin that causes illness, affecting the nervous system. Toxin affects the nervous system. Symptoms usually appear 18 to 36 hours, but can sometimes appear as few as 6 hours or as many as 10 days after eating; double vision, blurred vision, drooping eyelids, slurred speech, difficulty swallowing, dry mouth, and muscle weakness. If untreated, these symptoms may progress causing muscle paralysis and even death.

Cucumbers Recalled Over Salmonella Fear

CucumbersThomas Produce Company of Boca Raton, FL is recalling 174 bulk-packed containers of Cucumbers. This product has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella may experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.

This product was sold to distributors in Florida and Georgia between 12/15/2015 and 12/16/2015. All distributors that received this product have been notified as of the time of this press release.

The fresh, whole, green Cucumbers were sold in 166 cardboard bushel boxes (1 1/9 bushel size) with one of the following lot numbers ink-jet printed on the side: 1554311JDNK, 1554311HDNK, and 15143115DNK. These cucumbers were also distributed in 8 bulk cardboard bins(4’x4′ size) tagged with codes 15NKJD-1554311-D, 15NKHD-1554311-D, and 15NK5D-1514311-D.

No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this recall.

This recall notice is being issued due to an isolated instance in which a sample of Thomas Produce Cucumbers yielded a positive result for Salmonella in a random sample test conducted by the FDA. Out of an abundance of caution, the company has elected to recall all lots of cucumbers that were packed on the same day. The company has ceased production and distribution of the affected lots of cucumbers as the FDA and the company continue their investigation.

Consumers who have purchased these products are urged to not consume them.

Prior Cucumber Outbreaks:

On September 4, 2015 the CDC announced an outbreak of Salmonella Poona linked to consumption of cucumbers grown in Mexico and imported by Andrew & Williamson Fresh Produce. As of October 14 there were 838 people infected with the outbreak strains of Salmonella Poona. Patients resided in 36 states. Eleven illness clusters were identified in 7 states. In all of these clusters, interviews found that cucumbers were a food item eaten in common by ill people. The first onset of illness was July 3, 2015. One hundred fifty seven people were hospitalized and there were four deaths. The San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency isolated Salmonella from cucumbers collected during a visit to the Andrew & Williamson Fresh Produce facility. On September 4, 2015 Andrew & Williamson Fresh Produce voluntarily recalled all cucumbers sold under the “Limited Edition” brand label during the period from August 1, 2015 to September 21, 2015.

In 2014 a Salmonella Newport outbreak was determined through surveillance of PulseNet, a national molecular subtyping network for foodborne disease. A total of 275 cases were reported from 29 states and the District of Columbia. Illness onset dates ranged from May 25 to September 29, 2014. Thirty four percent (48 of 141) were hospitalized; one death was reported in an elderly man with bacteremia. Sixty-two percent (49 of 79) of respondents reported eating cucumbers in the week before becoming ill. Officials in Maryland, Delaware and New York worked with the FDA and USDA to conduct an informational traceback from retail establishments to identify a point of distribution for produce items. Preliminary traceback led to common grower in Maryland’s Eastern Shore in the Delmarva region. Officials collected 48 environmental samples from areas where cucumbers were grown, harvested and packed. No samples yielded Salmonella although sampling was performed several months after harvest.

In October 2013 Colorado public health officials investigated an outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 that occurred among customers of three Denver area Jimmy John’s restaurants. A total of 8 people became sick. Meal dates ranged between October 5 and October 9. Produce was suspected as the source of the outbreak. Cucumbers were statistically associated with illness.

On April 25, 2013 the CDC reported that a multistate outbreak of Salmonella Saintpaul was associated with illnesses in 73 persons residing in 18 states. At the close of the investigation on June 20, 2013 the number of outbreak associated cases had risen to 84. Among persons for whom information was available, illness onset dates ranged from January 12, 2013 to April 28, 2013. Ill persons ranged in age from less than 1 year to 89 years. Among 60 persons with available information, 17 (28%) were hospitalized. No deaths were reported. On April 24, 2013 the FDA placed Daniel Cardenas Izabal and Miracle Greenhouse of Culiacan, Mexico on Import Alert. The cucumbers were distributed by Tricar Sales, Inc. of Rio Rico, Arizona.

Pennsylvania Dairy Recalls Raw Milk Over Listeria

Raw-milk2_406x250Agriculture Department Warns Consumers to Discard Raw Milk Purchased at Northeastern Pennsylvania Dairy

Consumers who purchased raw milk from Gross Family Dairy in South Sterling, Wayne County, should discard it immediately due to the risk of Listeria.

The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture today said raw milk collected during required routine sampling by a commercial laboratory on December 17, 2015, tested positive for the bacteria. No illnesses have been reported as a result of the potential contamination, but if anyone who consumed the raw milk becomes ill, he or she should consult a physician. Symptoms of Listeriosis can appear in four days or up to three weeks after ingestion.

Gross Family Dairy sells raw milk on their farm as well as in Stroudsburg, Monroe County, at Earthlight Natural Foods, the Stroudsburg Farmers Market and the Monroe Farmers Market. It also sells raw milk at Dutch’s Market in Greentown, Pike County; Everything Natural in Clarks Summit, Lackawanna County; and at Matt’s Farm Stand in Hamlin, Wayne County. The milk is sold in half gallons and pints, and was bottled December 20, with a sell-by date of December 30.

Agriculture officials have ordered the owner to stop sale of all raw milk until further notice. Two samples taken at least 24 hours apart must test negative for pathogens before the farm can resume raw milk sales.

Raw milk is milk that has not been pasteurized.

Pennsylvania law allows farms to sell raw milk, but requires the farms to be permitted and inspected by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture to reduce health risks associated with unpasteurized products.

When an incident of contamination is discovered, the department’s milk sanitarian works with the raw milk permit holder to educate them on where the issue occurred and how to find a solution.

Symptoms of Listeriosis are fever, muscle aches, and sometimes gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea or diarrhea. If infection spreads to the nervous system, symptoms such as headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance or convulsions can occur. Infected pregnant women may experience only a mild, flu-like illness, but infections during pregnancy can lead to miscarriage or stillbirth.

For more information about Listeriosis, visit www.health.pa.gov.

To date, the Pennsylvania Department of Health is not aware of any illnesses related to these products. Any person who consumed raw milk from Gross Family Dairy and has symptoms should consult their physician, visit their local health center or call 877-PA HEALTH (714-3258).

The Tonkotsu Ramen product was primarily sent to Asian food distributors in the New Jersey, Georgia, Illinois and New York areas, and then on to retail stores. Only one product – Tonkotsu Ramen – manufactured at the Sun Noodle New Jersey facility was affected. All other products manufactured at other Sun Noodle locations are properly labeled and the Tonkotsu Ramen product is not made with any egg or egg white powder.

The specific lot codes affected are found here.

Salmonella Found at the Good Earth Egg Company

Good-Earth-Eggs1-282x282The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services reports Salmonella was found at an egg facility in Bonne Terre, Missouri.

According to DHSS, they recently conducted a testing at the Good Earth Egg Company processing facility in Bonne Terre and received samples that indicated the presence of Salmonella bacteria.

The facility was ordered to stay closed until it can be cleaned and re-sampled.

DHSS urges anyone that gets eggs from the Good Earth Egg Company to fully cook their eggs to 165 degrees, avoid cross contamination of raw eggs with ready to eat foods and wash their hands after handling eggs.

Symptoms of salmonella include diarrhea, vomiting, fever and/or stomach cramps. It usually develops within six to 72 hours after a consumer’s exposure to salmonella bacteria and generally lasts three to seven days.  Salmonella bacteria can be transmitted from person to person.  Some people who are infected may have no symptoms at all, but may still transmit the salmonella bacteria to others.  The spread of salmonella from person to person may be avoided by careful hand washing with soap and water, particularly after using the restroom.

Consumers who may have symptoms should go to a doctor. If salmonellosis is diagnosed, the local health department should be contacted to report the condition.

Hawaii Recalls Korean Raw Oysters After Reports of Norovirus Illnesses

Raw oysters imported from Korea and sold in bulk to distributors and food establishments in Hawaii are being recalled.

The Hawaii State Department of Health (DOH) said the individually quick frozen (IQF) packaged under the Dai One Food Company label with shellfish harvest dates of Feb. 10 -13, 2015 with shellfish tags on all shellfish cases are subject to the recall.

rawoyster_406x250The department has already conducted product trace-backs and embargoed all of the suspect product on Nov. 24 at various local shellfish distributors and restaurants,” said spokesman Peter Oshiro, “Although this product is not sold directly to the public, a recall has been issued as an additional safeguard to further notify anyone who may possess the product that it is unsafe and should be destroyed.”

A product embargo prohibits businesses from using a product suspected of causing illness until a determination is made on the safety of the product.

The department received reports of 11 sporadic illnesses in September, October, and November of this year that appeared to be linked to the consumption of raw oysters. Samples of the suspect oysters were sent to U.S. Food and Drug Administration Gulf Coast Seafood Laboratory in Alabama for testing, and the samples tested positive for Norovirus. With the positive lab results, DOH has ordered all of the embargoed product held by distributors and restaurants to be destroyed.

Norovirus symptoms include nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, fever, and headaches with onset usually within 12-48 hrs after consuming contaminated food. Anyone experiencing these symptoms should consult a physician and if foodborne illness is suspected, report it to the DOH Disease Investigation Branch at (808) 586-4586.

Department of Health food rules effective February 2014 require a consumer advisory at the point of sale for any restaurant or eatery serving raw or undercooked foods. The advisory states, “Consuming raw or undercooked meats, poultry, seafood, shellfish, or eggs may increase your risk of foodborne illness.” Pregnant or immunocompromised individuals are also advised not to consume any raw or undercooked foods.

Recalled Diced Celery and Onion Blend May Not Be E. Coli Source

http://ift.tt/1okTYX9Taylor Farms Pacific may have been a little too quick to recall its diced celery and onion blend over the Thanksgiving weekend. The latest U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) testing has been unable to confirm E. coli in the product.

As of Nov. 23, 19 people have been infected with E. coli O157:H7, and epidemiological evidence suggests that rotisserie chicken salad made and sold at Costco Wholesale stores in several states was a likely source of the outbreak.

Preliminary testing of a sample of diced celery and onion blend collected from a Costco location by the Montana Public Health Laboratory indicated the presence of E. coli O157:H7.

The blend was used to make the rotisserie chicken salad eaten by outbreak victims. It was supplied by Taylor Farms Pacific, which voluntarily recalled multiple products containing celery from retailers such as Costco, Starbucks and Target.

However, an investigation update provided by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Dec. 8 stated that further laboratory analysis was unable to confirm the presence of E. coli O157:H7 in the sample of diced celery and onion blend produced by Taylor Farms Pacific.

The preliminary test performed on the sample was a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test, which is commonly used to rapidly screen for the presence of bacterial DNA.

The diced celery and onion blend has not been ruled out as a source of the outbreak, and investigators are continuing to work to identify which ingredient in the chicken salad is linked to the illnesses.

CDC: Multistate Salmonella Outbreak May Be Linked to Recalled Nut Butters

A U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) investigation is underway into 11 Salmonella illnesses in nine states which may be linked to recently recalled nut butters.

The initial outbreak announcement will be posted sometime Thursday, Dec. 3, Laura Burnworth, a CDC health communication specialist, told Food Safety News.

The confirmed cases are being reported from Oregon (3), she said, with one each in California, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, North Carolina and New Jersey.

Nut butter in jarThe Salmonella serotype has been identified as Paratyphi B variant L(+) tatrate(+), which used to be called Salmonella Java. That is the same outbreak strain responsible for the outbreak this past July linked to the consumption of frozen raw tuna.

Burnworth noted that Salmonella Paratyphi B variant L(+) tartrate(+) does not cause typhoid fever.

CDC investigators individually contacted eight of those sickened in this outbreak and found that six of the eight had exposure to nut butter spreads with the JEM Raw Chocolate brand, Burnworth said. Because of the outbreak investigation, that company announced a voluntary recall of its full line of nut butters on Wednesday, Dec. 2.

Jennifer Moore, CEO of JEM Raw Chocolate in Bend, OR, said that while some of those sickened had the company’s nut butter, she told Food Safety News that so far all product samples tested have come out negative.

JEM Raw has never had any problems with foodborne pathogens in five years of operation and three years of producing nut butters, she said, including after a visit from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration during which inspectors took 180 environmental swabs of the production facility over three days.

“It was all completely clean,” she said, adding that the company asks for certificates of analysis for Salmonella, E. coli, Listeria, molds and yeast and does voluntary third-party testing of its products.

“We do everything we can and keep a sample of every batch that we’ve ever created in case we have to do a recall,” Moore said.

Food Safety News will post additional information on this outbreak when it becomes available.

Recall information follows:

JEM Raw Chocolate LLC (JEM Raw) of Bend, OR, has announced a voluntary recall of its full line of nut butter spreads due to the potential for contamination with Salmonella.

There have been 11 illnesses reported in connection with nut butter products, but no deaths or hospitalizations to date. Only one of those illnesses is being reported from Oregon, according to the Oregon Health Authority.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Oregon Health Authority (OHA), the Oregon Department of Agriculture (ODA), and the U.S. Center for Disease Control (CDC) have linked the illnesses to person(s) who have consumed nut spreads, including JEM Raw products.

The JEM Raw recalled products were distributed nationwide in retail stores and through mail order. Products were distributed between June 2015 and November 2015.

JEM Raw is working with distributors and retailers to remove these products from retail shelves. Consumers do not need to return the product to the store where it was purchased. Instead, consumers should discard any product and its container. JEM Raw will work directly with each consumer to manage replacement of its product.

Additional details can be found at www.jemraw.com. Those with questions may contact the company at (541) 728-3844 between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. PT, Monday through Friday.

Jen Moore, company co-founder and CEO, said, “As a health food company, our customer’s health is our number-one priority. Although no JEM Raw products have tested positive for Salmonella, we feel strongly that issuing a voluntary recall is the right thing to do. JEM is working closely with the FDA, ODA, and OHA to determine the root cause of the outbreak.”

Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (e.g., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.
