Fresh Express recalls bagged, chopped romaine

Chiquita Brands International’s salad division, Fresh Express Inc., is recalling bagged, chopped romaine because a production line error resulted in condiment packets for other products being included in the romaine bags.

The condiments’ ingredients are not included on the chopped romaine labels and therefore pose an allergen threat for people with food allergies or sensitivities to milk, eggs, wheat and fish, according to the recall notice on the Food and Drug Administration website.

“… even though the individual packets are enclosed in another sealed package, Fresh Express issued a recall out of an abundance of caution to protect the health and well-being of consumers who may be at risk from exposure to undeclared allergens,” the company said in the recall notice.

The recalled 32-ounce Fresh Express branded chopped romaine lettuce bags have a use-by date of Feb. 19 and a product code of G034A06A both on the upper right of the front of the bags. The back of the packaging has a universal product code of 0 7127926100 3 near the product bar code.

The romaine from the Salinas, Calif., company primarily went to retail stores in Eastern and Southern states, according to the notice. Individual states are: Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Massachusetts, Maine, Maryland, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Virginia.

“Fresh Express is coordinating with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, has conducted an investigation into this isolated event and is implementing corrective steps to prevent future occurrences,” the notice states.

Consumers in possession of the recalled product should discard it. A refund is available where purchased or by contacting the Fresh Express Consumer Response Center toll free at 800-242-5472 between 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. EST.
