A sample from one lot of macadamia nuts tested by the Food and Drug Administration tested positive for Salmonella, spurring the initial recall by the company, which is based in Captain Cook, Hawaii.

“While we are not aware of any further positive samples, Mahina Mele Farms feels it is in the best interest of public health to voluntarily recall all lots currently on the market, until the source of the contamination can be identified,” according to the company’s expanded recall posted on the FDA’s website Feb. 4.

The Mahina Mele Farms website did not have any information about the recall as of Feb. 4. The site listed the recalled products as out of stock.

The recall includes various sized packages of Izzie Macs! branded macadamia nuts and 12-ounce plastic tubs of Baby Bruddah’s Mac Nut Buttah and Baby Bruddah’s Chocolate Mac Nut Buttah.

“Mahina Mele Farms is working with retailers to pull products from store shelves,” the recall notice states. “We are working closely with the F
DA to find the source of this contamination.

“Customers who have purchased the products should not consume them and should return them to the store where they were purchased for a full refund or replacement. Mahina Mele Farms LLC will reimburse the wholesaler for any returned product.”recalled-Mahina-Mele-madacamia-nut-butter

Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Healthy people infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea that  may be bloody, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result more severe illnesses such as arterial infections, endocarditis and arthritis.

Mahina Mele Farms initially recalled three lots of the macadamia nuts and butter on Jan. 21. That recall only involved products distributed in Alaska, California, Hawaii, Maryland and Virginia from Oct. 21 through Nov. 25, 2015.

The expanded recall notice does not include distribution details.
