Costco Wholesale Canada Ltd. is recalling Ajinomoto brand Yakitori Chicken with Japanese-Style Fried Rice from the marketplace due to possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) says consumers should not consume the recalled product.
In addition, Costco Wholesale Canada Ltd. has indicated that some Costco warehouse locations did provide free food samples of the recalled product in recent months.
The recalled product carries the following codes: BB/MA 16 JL 01 to 17 MA 07 with a Uniform Product Code (UOC) of 0 71757 05642 8. It comes only in a 1.53 kg size.
If you think you became sick from eating a recalled product, CFIA say call your doctor.
The agency also says consumers should check for recalled product in their homes. Recalled product should be thrown out or returned to the store where it was purchased.
Food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes may not look or smell spoiled but can still make people sick. Symptoms can include vomiting, nausea, persistent fever, muscle aches, severe headache and neck stiffness. Pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk. Although infected pregnant women may experience only mild, flu-like symptoms, the infection can lead to premature delivery, infection of the newborn or even stillbirth. In severe cases of illness, people may die.
This recall was triggered by a recall in another country. The CFIA is conducting a food safety investigation, which may lead to the recall of other products. If other high-risk products are recalled, the CFIA will notify the public through updated Food Recall Warnings.
The CFIA is verifying that industry is removing recalled product from the marketplace.
There have been no reported illnesses in Canada associated with the consumption of this product, however, there have been reported illnesses in the United States linked to consuming products manufactured or processed by CRF Frozen Foods, the manufacturer of one of the ingredients.
