Having found Listeria monocytogenes in a production plant, Pinnacle Foods Inc. initiated a recall Friday of all best-by dates of a variety of flavors of Aunt Jemima and Hungry Man branded frozen pancakes, waffles and french toast.
“No illnesses have been reported,” according to the recall notice. “The products are being recalled as a precautionary measure given the health and safety of our consumers is our top priority. Pinnacle Foods initiated the recall after testing indicated the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in the plant environment. We are working in coordination with the Food and Drug Administration on this recall.
“All affected distributors and retail and food service customers are being notified and the affected products are being removed from store shelves.
This announcement applies only to the Aunt Jemima frozen products listed below and does not include any Aunt Jemima dry mixes and syrups.”
People who have eaten the recalled products and developed symptoms of Listeria monocytogenes infection should seek medical attention and tell their doctors about the possible exposure so proper diagnostic tests can be performed.
Those who have eaten the recalled products and are not currently ill should monitor themselves for symptoms of Listeriosis in the coming weeks. It can take up to 70 days after exposure for symptoms to develop.
Symptoms include high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea.
Otherwise healthy people may have only short-term symptoms, but serious and sometimes fatal infections can develop in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Listeria infection also can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
“Affected product may be returned to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact Pinnacle Foods at 88-299-7646,” according to the recall notice.
