Distributor recalls potato salad weeks after use-by dates

Potato salad sold through Amazon Fresh from April through mid-June is being recalled more than two weeks after its latest use-by date because it contained frozen peas that were recalled June 17 for potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination.

Maryland-based Hearn Kirkwood, a foodservice distributing company, is recalling “Evie’s Cheddar Potato Macaroni Salad” in a secondary recall to the National Frozen Foods recall of frozen green peas. National supplied peas to a variety of retailers and other food producers, including the company that made the recalled potato salad.

“The recalled products was sold through Amazon Fresh in the locations Bellevue, Washington area between 04/08/16 and 06/13/16,” the Hearn Kirkwood recall notice states.

“There have been no reported illnesses attributed to the recalled items to date. The recalled product was sold in 6.0 oz. clear plastic containers with the name ‘Evie’s Cheddar Potato Macaroni Salad,’ UPC code 6637511772 and ‘use by’ dates of 04/15/16 to 06/20/16.”

Listeria monocytogenes is a microscopic organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.

Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

“Consumers who have purchased this product should discard it and contact Amazon Fresh at 866-380-0525 between the hours of 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. EDT for a full refund,” according to the recall notice.
