The recall was the result of sampling and inspectional findings by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). FDA found Listeria monocytogenes in multiple locations throughout the facility.
SM Fish Corp. ceased production and distribution of products following discussion with FDA on Sept. 8. The company and FDA continue their investigation into the cause of the problem.
Consumers who have purchased any of the above-listed products are urged not to consume them and to promptly discard them. Consumers with questions may contact the company at (718) 945-9838, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. EDT, or via email at recallssmf@gmail.com.
The company announced a recall of its OSSIE’S brand ready-to-eat herring salads last month, also for potential Listeria contamination.
Listeria is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
