More Backroad Country products recalled for Listeria concerns

Troyer Cheese Inc. has expanded its recall of nuts and snacks to include Backroad Country brand sunflower seeds, which may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

The recalled sunflower seeds, packaged at Amish Wedding Foods and distributed by Troyer Cheese Inc., between Feb. 18 and May 24, were sent to: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Maryland, Minnesota, Minneapolis, Missouri, Mississippi, Montana, North Carolina, New Jersey, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Wisconsin and West Virginia.

The recalled 7-ounce packages (top photo) have some identifying codes on the back label. The 30-pound bulk boxes (bottom photo) have a black and white label on their boxes.

The following identifying information can be found on the labels of the recalled sunflower seeds:

• 7-ounce packages of sunflower seeds with code 15301, product/case barcode number 0 49646 11219 7 and a best by date of May 2017; and
• 30-pound bulk bags of sunflower seeds with code 2160, product/case barcode number 1 13671 02091 5 and a best by date of May 2017.

Troyer Cheese Inc. previously recalled several other products, also because it’s supplier recalled sunflower kernels because of possible Listeria contamination.

“Consumers are urged not to consume these products. Consumers who purchased these products may take them back to the store where they purchased them for a refund or simply discard them,” according to the recall notice on the Food and Drug Administration website.

“Consumers seeking information may call 1-877-343-1614 Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. Retailers and wholesale customers should check their inventories and shelves to confirm that none of the products are present or available for purchase by consumers or in warehouse inventories.”

Listeria monocytogenes is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
