Shearer’s Foods LLC of Massillon, OH, is voluntarily recalling five brands of snack chips that were made with powdered milk ingredients from Valley Milk Products LLC that have been recalled because of Salmonella contamination.
The Saturday recall notice from Shearer’s Foods is one of at least five secondary recalls of products ranging from Publix brand pancake mix to Great Value macaroni and cheese. For additional information, see below links to Food Safety News coverage of the other recalls.
As with the other recalls related to the powdered milk from Valley Milk Products in Strasburg, VA, no illnesses had been reported in relation to any of the recalled products as of the dates the recall notices were posted.
“Shearer’s Foods LLC initiated a recall after being notified on Dec. 7 by a seasoning supplier that Valley Milk Products LLC had initiated a recall of a nonfat high-heat milk powder and sweet cream buttermilk powder that is used in a variety of their seasonings,” according to the Shearer’s recall notice.
“Customers who purchased the recalled product should dispose of it immediately. Consumers with questions may contact Shearer’s Consumer Affairs Department toll free at 800-428-6843.”
On Dec. 1, U.S. Marshals seized more than 4 million pounds of powdered milk from Valley Milk Products facility in Strasburg, VA. The Food and Drug Administration sought the enforcement help from the Marshals after finding out the company knew its facility and products were contaminated with Salmonella.
Anyone who has consumed any of the recalled products and developed symptoms of Salmonella infection should seek medical attention and tell their doctors about the possible exposure to the pathogen.
Salmonella is a microscopic organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy people infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses.
