Ron’s Home Style Foods recalls fruit/nut salads in three states

Ron’s Home Style Foods Inc. is recalling ready-to-eat fruit and nut dessert salads because they may be contaminated with Salmonella from powdered milk made by Valley Milk Products LLC.

The Houston-based Ron’s Home Style Foods distributed the recalled fruit and nut salads to foodservice distributors and retail supermarkets in Texas, Arkansas and Oklahoma, according to the recall notice on the Food and Drug Administration website. The notice did not indicate where the foodservice distributors might have sent the recalled products.

Specific salad flavors subject to the recall are Tropical Fruit Supreme, Pineapple Nut Delight and Pistachio Crème. Consumers can identify the recalled products by looking for the labeling information in the chart at right. The salads for retail sales are packaged in plastic containers.

“The recall is due to a recall of an ingredient used in manufacturing these products. Valley Milk Products reported that certain lots of dry milk they manufactured have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. While Pistachio Crème does not contain the ingredient, it is made on the same production line as Tropical Fruit Supreme and Pineapple Nut Delight therefore we are recalling it as well,” according to the recall notice.

“Consumers who have purchased the products are urged not to consume them and to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 800-856-3131.”

As of Wednesday, no confirmed illnesses had been reported in connection to any of the products recalled because of the problems with the Valley Milk Products powdered milk ingredients.

Anyone who has consumed any of the recalled products and developed symptoms of Salmonella infection should seek medical attention and tell their doctors about the possible exposure to the pathogen.

Food contaminated with Salmonella may not look or smell spoiled but can still make you sick. Young children, pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems may contract serious and sometimes deadly infections.

Healthy people may experience short-term symptoms such as fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps and diarrhea. Long-term complications may include severe arthritis.

A variety of other companies have already recalled processed foods — potato chips, macaroni and cheese, pancake/waffle mix and various baking mixes, etc. — including products sold under house brands for Wal-Mart, Publix Super Markets, Aldi and Dollar Tree retailers because of the powdered milk from Valley Milk Products LLC.

All of the products were made with the implicated powdered milk from Valley Milk Products in Strasburg, VA. At the request of the FDA, armed U.S. Marshals raided Valley Milk on Dec. 1 and seized 4 million pounds of powdered milk and powdered buttermilk.

In a document filed in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Virginia the FDA reported environmental swabs collected at the production facility returned positive results for Salmonella. Inspectors also found internal records at Valley Milk that showed the company itself had found Salmonella in the facility and in finished products.
