Stonyfield Recalls YoBaby Yogurt Cups for Potential Coliform Contamination

Stonyfield Farms of Londonderry, NH, is voluntarily recalling 188 six-packs of 4-oz. YoBaby Peach/Pear cups with the code date June 05 2014 (UPC 052159701161).

The product was shipped to Target stores in Alabama, Virginia, Tennessee, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina, and Walmart stores in Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey and Delaware. A full list of potentially affected stores can be found at Stonyfield.com.

Consumers who purchased the potentially affected YoBaby yogurt cups from Walmart or Target with the June 05 2014 code date are asked to return opened and unopened containers to their retailers to be reimbursed for the full value of the purchase. Affected yogurt cups were only available for purchase on or after April 23, 2014.

The recall comes in response to internal testing of the product that revealed the possibility that some product shipped from the company’s Londonderry plant may be affected by coliform contamination. Although the potential problem is not widespread, Stonyfield is taking this measure to ensure the safety of its consumers.

Stonyfield advised its distribution network to immediately remove these specific code-dated yogurts from retail shelves. No other Stonyfield products were affected.

Consumers with questions should contact Stonyfield Consumer Relations at 1-800-PRO-COWS or email at crelations@Stonyfield.com.

“Our first priority has always been and always will be the welfare of our consumers,” says Esteve Torrens, Stonyfield CEO. “While we continue to investigate this issue and believe that the risk of injury is extremely remote, we feel that this voluntary measure is the prudent and responsible step at this time.”

This recall is being made with the knowledge of the Food and Drug Administration, which posted the recall release here.

Spice Recalled by California Company After FDA Testing

Miravalle brand Achiote Molido Ground Annatto spice in 0.75-ounce packages are being recalled for possible Salmonella contamination after product testing by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). No illnesses have yet been associated with the recalled product.

El Monte, CA-based Miravalle Foods Inc. said the recalled 0.75-ounce packages of Ground Annatto were distributed in retail stores in California, Utah, Idaho, Colorado, Nevada, Washington and Oregon. Spice production has been suspended while FDA, California Department of Public Health, and Miravalle Foods continue their investigation as to the source of the problem.

The product comes in a clear plastic package marked with lot #0015 & #0018 on the top of the UPC number (712810005020).

Salmonella is a pathogen that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, mostly in young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems. Otherwise healthy persons infected with Salmonella may experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (e.g., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

Consumers who have purchased 0.75-ounce packages of Ground Annatto with those lot numbers may return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.

CDC: Listeria Outbreak Linked To Roos Foods Appears Over

The Listeria monocytogenes outbreak earlier this year that killed one person and sickened seven people in Delaware and one in California appears to be over, according to a final update from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The victims were all of Hispanic ethnicity, CDC’s update noted, and five of the illnesses (two mother-newborn pairs and one newborn) were related to pregnancy. Seven of the eight people sickened were hospitalized. No new illnesses related to this outbreak have been reported since the last CDC update on March 12, 2014.

The agency’s update states that the investigation by local and state public health and regulatory agencies, CDC and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) indicated that cheese products made by Roos Foods of Kenton, DE, were the likely source of this outbreak. The cheese products have been recalled, and a list of the recalled brands can be found here.

Due to the possibility of a continued public health threat, FDA suspended the food facility registration of Roos Foods on March 11, 2014, meaning that the company cannot legally distribute any products.

The recalled cheese products were distributed through retail stores in Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Virginia and the District of Columbia. CDC advised anyone still having the recalled products not to eat any of them and to check their homes for these products and discard them.

Listeriosis is an important cause of illness in the United States. Consumers who develop a fever after eating dairy products manufactured by Roos Foods should seek medical care immediately and tell the health care provider about eating a recalled dairy product. Although people can sometimes develop listeriosis up to two months after eating contaminated food, symptoms usually start within several days.

Listeria can grow in dairy products at room and refrigerator temperatures. Listeria can also be spread to other dairy products, including cheeses that are cut and served on the same cutting board or stored in the same area as contaminated cheese.

More information about listeriosis and the steps people can take to reduce their risk of infection can be found on the CDC Listeria website (or the Spanish version of the website).

Kraft Recalls Oscar Mayer Classic Wieners for Packaging Mix-Up

About 96,000 pounds of Oscar Mayer Classic Wieners were recalled Sunday by Kraft Foods Group Inc. of Columbia, MO, because of a packaging error. Classic Cheese Dogs are contained in packaging for Classic Wieners.

The packaging error means that the ingredients are not properly listed and a known allergen, milk, is not listed. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service said that the cheese dogs contain pasteurized cheese.

The following products are subject to recall:

•16-oz. packages – individual consumer packages – of “Classic Wieners Made with Turkey & Chicken, Pork Added” with “USE BY 16 Jun 2014” date and product code “044700000632”

•Cases of 16-oz. packages – distributed to retailers – of “Classic Cheese Dogs Made with Turkey & Chicken, Pork Added, and Pasteurized Cheese Product” with “USE BY 16 Jun 2014” date and case code “00447000005300”

The products were produced on March 2-3, 2014, and bear the establishment number “Est. 537H” inside the USDA mark of inspection. The products were distributed to Kraft distribution centers and in retail stores nationwide.

A consumer who notified the company on April 18, 2014, discovered the problem. The company contacted USDA the following day regarding the issue.

FSIS and the company have received no reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products. Anyone concerned about a reaction should contact a healthcare provider.

CDC: Listeria Probably Contaminated WI Cheese During Production Process

A Listeria outbreak in the Midwest linked to one death and a miscarriage likely was caused by contamination during the cheese-making process, according to a new report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“Inspection of the cheese-making facility revealed that substantial sanitation deficiencies during the cheese-making process itself, after the milk was pasteurized, likely led to contamination,” the agency’s April 4 Morbidity and Mortality Weekly report stated.

The Listeria outbreak was first reported last summer and was linked to three types of Crave Brothers pasteurized soft cheese manufactured in Waterloo, WI. The cheeses РLes Fr̬res, Petit Fr̬re and Petit Fr̬re with Truffles Рwere recalled as a result.

One death related to the outbreak occurred in Minnesota, and Listerosis cases were reported in Minnesota, Ohio, Indiana and Illinois. The Minnesota Department of Agriculture tested samples of the cheese from two retail outlets, revealing the outbreak strain to be Listeria monocytogenes.

Even though pasteurization will eliminate Listeria bacteria in milk, contamination can still happen afterward, CDC noted.

“Cheese-making facilities should use strict sanitation and microbiologic monitoring, regardless of whether they use pasteurized milk,” the report stated.

Listeriosis primarily affects older adults, pregnant women, newborns and adults with compromised immune systems. Symptoms begin with fever and muscle aches and advance to stiff neck, confusion and loss of balance. More information on Listeria can be found here.

Organic Black Peppercorns Recalled for Possible Salmonella Contamination

Sprouts Farmers Market Inc. of Phoenix, AZ, issued a recall of store-branded organic black peppercorns on Friday, saying that the product could potentially be contaminated with Salmonella.

The grocery chain reportedly said the product was being recalled from all stores. No illnesses have been reported.

Sprouts said the recall was issued after a sample taken during routine testing by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration revealed the presence of Salmonella in one lot.

The product is sold in a 2.12-ounce, clear glass jar and with an expiration date of October 2016, Sprouts said. Each container is identified with a label showing the Sprouts company logo and the description “Organic Black Peppercorns.”

As a precaution, Sprouts is also recalling Frontier-branded organic whole black peppercorns sold in a 16-ounce container and Simply Organic-branded whole black peppercorns sold in a 2.65-ounce jar.

Information on the related UPC Codes and Lot Codes and photos of the recalled products can be found here.

Salmonella is most commonly found in meat, poultry, eggs and milk. Salmonellosis can lead to fever, diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and, in serious cases, death.

WA Firm Recalls Products for Unapproved Canning Procedure, No Permit

A European-style market and deli in Washington state is recalling all lots of its canned tomato juice and adjika (a spicy dip) produced in its Auburn and Tacoma stores since September 2013.

Marvel Food & Deli officials stated that the action was taken “as a precaution for the safety of its customers” because the canning process had not been tested and evaluated and the products were prepared “without the benefit of an approved procedure and permit.” Customers were warned not to use the products even if they did not look or smell spoiled.

Although the company stated that no complaints of illness had been received related to the consumption of its products, its statement noted that, “When canned products are inadequately processed, there is the potential for contamination with Clostridium botulinum, a bacterium which can cause life-threatening illness or death.”

“We are dedicated to our customers’ satisfaction and are taking extra precautionary measures at this time to assure the complete safety of our products,” said Andrey Ivantsov, owner of Marvel Food & Deli. “We thank you in advance for your immediate response and sincerely apologize for any inconveniences this may have caused.”

All existing in-house canned tomato juice and adjika products have been removed from store shelves, and Marvel Food & Deli staff members will be working with the appropriate state and local agencies to get approval for any future in-house canning production and sales.

Symptoms of foodborne botulism start 12-36 hours and sometimes several days after eating a contaminated food and include blurred vision, dry mouth, paralysis of the muscles (especially those muscles that control the face, swallowing, and breathing), vomiting, constipation and diarrhea. People who have eaten one of the products described below and who are experiencing any of these symptoms should seek immediate medical attention.

All lots of the following produced purchased after September 2013 have been recalled:

16-oz. Country Style Adjika (code: 2176232116), 32-oz. Country Style Adjika (code: 2176232104), and 32-oz. Home Style Tomato Juice, (code 2176232105).

Consumers who have purchased the firm’s tomato juice or adjika are urged to return it to either Marvel Food & Deli stores for a full refund. The Auburn store is at 615 C St. S.W. and the Tacoma store is at 301 133rd St. S. Customers may also contact the company at (253) 227-4740 or visit the website (go to “Contact” section).
