BBQ, Hot and Teriyaki Sauces Recalled in Washington State for Botulism Risk

Richard’s Rubs & Seasonings LLC is recalling Richard’s Too Good BBQ Sauce, Richard’s Too Good Hot Sauce and Richard’s Too Good Teriyaki Sauce because they may have been improperly processed and may have the potential to be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum, which can cause botulism, a serious and potentially fatal foodborne illness.

The recalled sauces were sold in western Washington grocery stores and butcher shops in Kitsap, Snohomish and King counties. Sauces are packaged in 12 oz. tall glass bottles with metal screw caps and black heat-resistant tamper seals.

The products being recalled were distributed up to June 17, 2014. This recall has been initiated because of a consumer complaint indicating that sauce may have been improperly processed. Richard’s Rubs & Seasonings LLC has not been notified of any illness associated with its products.

Foodborne botulism is a severe type of food poisoning caused by the ingestion of foods containing the potent neurotoxin formed during growth of the organism. Foodborne botulism can cause the following symptoms: general weakness, dizziness, double-vision and trouble with speaking or swallowing. Difficulty in breathing, weakness of other muscles, abdominal distension and constipation may also be common symptoms.

People experiencing these problems should seek immediate medical attention. Consumers are warned not to use the product even if it does not look or smell spoiled.

Consumers who have purchased recalled sauces are urged to return them to the place of purchase. Consumers with questions may contact the company at (206) 854-7046 during the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. PDT. Check here for updates on this recall.

Delicious on a hot summer night. You can make it super simple and quick by using just shredded lettuce with the quickly boiled pork slices on top and adding sesame or ponzu dipping sauce. That's delicious, too, but taking just a little more time with the salad and maybe even the sauce makes it even better. This is what I did.

Wok Seared Fusion "Succotash"

I love summer stir fries using one or just a few fresh ingredients, no sauce (just salt) and minimal (or no) oil. The secret is in using a dry (but very well seasoned) wok to put a lovely sear on your fresh veggies. This technique works very well with baby eggplants, garlic scapes, jalapenos, bell peppers, mushrooms, even fresh pineapple. Hear I am searing Asian ingredients to create a kind of a fusion "succotash". My wife and I have both been missing succotash and I think that this is a successful fusion riff on this classic side dish.

Lawsuit Filed Against Navitas Naturals Over Recalled Sprouted Chia Seed Powder

A Colorado woman who was hospitalized with a Salmonella Oranienburg infection linked to the nationwide recall of sprouted chia seed powder has filed a lawsuit against Navitas Naturals of Novato, CA, which manufactures and sells the product.

Carolyn Marie Shirley of Fort Collins, CO, is being represented by Marler Clark, the Seattle-based food safety law firm, and by co-counsel John Riley of Montgomery Little & Soran, PC, of Greenwood Village, CO. (Bill Marler of Marler Clark is the publisher of Food Saf ety News.)

“Many people think that healthy foods are not susceptible to Salmonella outbreaks, but that is just not true,” said Marler, who has been working to help improve food safety standards since representing victims of the Jack in the Box E. coli outbreak in the early 1990s. “Healthy foods are just as prone to Salmonella and E. coli as milk and eggs,” he added.

Shirley is one of at least 65 people in the U.S. and Canada who have been sickened by several brands of the powdered chia seed product, which were recently been recalled in both countries. She became ill on or about March 14, 2014, after consuming Navitas Naturals chia seed powder purchased at her local Sprouts Farmer’s Market, which was subject to the recent recall.

Soon after consuming the chia seed powder, Shirley began began suffering from a gastrointestinal illness. Her condition worsened daily until she required hospitalization. While hospitalized, she tested positive for Salmonella Oranienburg. The main symptoms of Salmonella infection include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. At the time her complaint was filed against Navitas Naturals on Thursday, she was still recovering from the Salmonella infection.

Salmonella is transmitted by food, water, or surfaces that have been contaminated with the feces of an infected animal or person. Many animals carry Salmonella, yet do not get sick. Salmonella can also be found in unpasteurized egg and milk products. It is commonly transmitted via the fecal-oral route from one infected person to another. Symptoms (which typically develop six to 72 hours after infection) may be mild, and an infected person can continue to carry Salmonella for weeks after symptoms have subsided.

The best ways to prevent the spread of this illness are to avoid preparing food for others while ill, thoroughly cooking meat and egg products, not consuming unpasteurized eggs and milk products, and washing hands, especially after using the bathroom and before handling or preparing food.

No illnesses have been reported to date.

DeLauro Calls for Briefing on Beef Recalled for Mad Cow Potential

Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) has requested a briefing with Acting Under Secretary for Food Safety, Brian Ronholm, about recalled beef potentially contaminated with Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE), also known as mad cow disease.

The Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced Wednesday that Fruitland American Meat of Jackson, MO, had issued a recall of approximately 4,012 pounds of fresh beef products because the dorsal root ganglia may not have been completely removed, which is not compliant with agency regulations that require their removal in cattle 30 months of age and older.

Although none of the animals displayed signs of BSE before slaughter, the dorsal root ganglia is one set of tissues that may contain the infective agent.

The potentially tainted meat went to a Whole Foods distribution center in Connecticut and to two restaurants in New York City and Kansas City, DeLauro wrote in her letter to Ronholm.

The recalled product was produced between September 5, 2013 and April 24, 2014.

In her letter, DeLauro questioned why it took ten months for the error to be discovered, citing other recent examples of beef recalls affected over an extended period of time, such as the Wolverine Packing Co. and the Rancho Feeding Corporation recalls.

“Was this a matter of inadequate staffing levels, poor training, negligence, or some other reason?” DeLauro asked. “I want to learn more.”

Lansal Inc. (doing business as Hot Mama’s Foods) announced Sunday that it is voluntarily recalling 304 containers (approximately 114 pounds) of Trader Joe’s Egg White Salad with Chives packaged in 6-ounce plastic containers due to concerns about possible Listeria monocytogenes.

Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

Baby Formula Recalled in UK After Newborn Death

Liquid food for premature newborns that was distributed in the United Kingdom is under an urgent recall after being linked to the death of one child and blood poisoning in 14 others, according to The Guardian.

The affected formula, administered to newborns in hospitals, was delivered to 22 healthcare facilities.

The 15 children suffered from septicemia after receiving drips of the liquid food, produced by London-based ITH Pharma Limited.

The formula is believed to be contaminated with Bacillus cereus, a bacteria known to cause illness from consuming food that has been improperly cooked or has sat at room temperature for several hours.

All 22 hospitals that received the food have been notified of the problem, and none are believed to be carrying it any longer.

The company is reportedly working with health authorities and believes it detected the problem that caused the contamination, calling it “an extremely unusual instance.”

Canadian Recall of Chia Seed Powder Expands; Salmonella Case Count up to 17 in the U.S.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has updated its recall warning issued May 30 regarding sprouted chia seed powder to include additional product information identified during its food safety investigation.

The May 30 warning came after Advantage Health Matters and Back 2 the Garden announced they were recalling various products containing dried sprouted organic chia seed powder from the marketplace due to possible Salmonella contamination.

Nine cases of Salmonella infection linked to consumption of the powder have been identified in three provinces. The Salmonella strains identified as associated with this Canadian outbreak include S. Newport and S. Hartford.

As of June 2, 17 people from 10 U.S. states been sickened with Salmonella infections linked to the recalled chia seed powder, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). CDC notes that 12 of those 17 were infected with a strain of S. Newport and five with a strain of S. Hartford, two of the 17 have been hospitalized, and no deaths have been reported.

The outbreak strain of S. Hartford in five U.S. cases matches the outbreak strain in Canada, CDC added.

Food contaminated with Salmonella may not look or smell spoiled but can still make you sick. Young children, pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems may contract serious and sometimes deadly infections. Healthy people may experience short-term symptoms such as fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps and diarrhea. Long-term complications may include severe arthritis.

CFIA stated June 3 that the following products have been sold in British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Quebec and through Internet sales. Consumers are warned not to consume them but to throw them out or return them to the store where they were purchased.

Dave's Chow Mein

My own take on my grandmother's dish. Apparently, back in the 50s, it was all the rage for American housewives to cook chow mein. And even though the dish is not authentic Chinese, it is authentic Chinese-American. This side-dish makes 7 Cups of chow mein; it is intended to be served in 1-Cup servings.

Big Fine and Guilty Plea Might Keep DeCosters Out of Jail

Austin “Jack” DeCoster and his son, Peter DeCoster, will accept some responsibility today for their contaminated eggs, which made almost 62,000 people sick four years ago, but don’t look for either man to serve much in the way of jail time.

Plea agreement details released ahead of today’s federal magistrate hearing in Sioux City, IA, show the DeCosters have a deal with the government to pay about $6.8 million, which, in turn, greatly reduces their exposure to federal incarceration.

The two men and their company, Quality Egg LLC, are making their first appearance in court as defendants this morning for arraignment and a hearing to allow the court to accept the plea agreement.

Court documents show the detailed agreement was reached in mid-April, a month before the federal charges were brought against the former poultry executives. It means the pair may have to make only one more appearance in federal court, and that assumes federal Magistrate Judge Leonard T. Strand does not hand down sentences today.

The agreement is clear that a guilty plea from the company on all counts and acceptance of the $6.8-million fine is the price of more lenient handling of the DeCosters, who will each plead guilty to a single misdemeanor of introducing or causing the introduction of adulterated food into interstate commerce.

According to Peter E. Deegan Jr., the lead prosecutor, all three defendants will waive reading of the indictment and plead guilty as charged. Jack DeCoster will enter the guilty plea for Quality Egg, as he is the trustee of the DeCoster Revocable Trust, which owns the company.

Both men will acknowledge that, in August 2010, while they were in positions of authority at Quality Egg, they introduced shell eggs into interstate commerce that were adulterated because they contained a poisonous or deleterious substance in the form of Salmonella Enteriditis that may have rendered them injurious to health.

In exchange for their guilty pleas, the DeCosters will receive consideration at sentencing, limiting their personal fines to $100,000 and significantly reducing any jail time from the one-year maximum.

Jack DeCoster will also plead guilty to three counts, including felony bribery of a USDA inspector, on behalf of Quality Egg, LLC, which owned the two egg production facilities responsible for the largest shell egg recall in U.S. history.

In the plea agreement, Quality Egg agrees to pay a fine of about $6.8 million for the counts of bribery of a public official (a USDA egg inspector) and introducing misbranded food into interstate commerce. The company will pay another $100,000 fine for introducing adulterated food into interstate commerce.

Quality Egg must deposit about $1.1 million with the court’s clerk by July 9 and then pay the remaining $5.69 million at the date set for sentencing. Quality Egg is also putting up a $10,000 “forfeiture” payment connected to the proceeds of the bribery.

The company will plead guilty to a second felony for selling misbranded food in interstate commerce, beginning Jan. 1, 2006, and continuing to approximately Aug. 12, 2010, the day before the company initiated the recall of more than a half-billion shell eggs. Before that recall began, the DeCoster egg empire is charged with selling eggs labeled to make them appear “not as old as they actually were.”

In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses.
