Spaghetti Napolitan
This is a yoshoku (Euro-Japanese) recipe from Yoshikami, a little restaurant in the old Asakusa neighborhood of Tokyo, Japan. The original recipe was created at the New Grand Hotel in Yokohama, Japan, after World War II to cater to American GI's, and soon became a mealtime favorite across the rest of the country.

Iowa Company Recalls Smoked Uncured Ham for Insufficient Labeling
Mary Ann’s Specialty Foods of Webster City, IA, is recalling approximately 3,536 pounds of Niman Ranch Applewood Smoked Uncured Petite Ham because the establishment number was not included on the label, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced on Wednesday.
The following products are subject to recall:
- Various weight packages of “Niman Ranch Applewood Smoked Uncured Petite Ham,” bearing the following identifying use by/ freeze by dates: “2/5/2014,” “2/10/2014,” “2/11/2013,” and “2/13/2013.”
The package covered by the recall may lack the establishment number “1221W” inside the USDA mark of inspection or elsewhere on the label. Although the producing establishment number was not included, which is a regulatory requirement, the distributor information was available. The products were distributed to retail stores nationwide. These products were produced between Oct. 23-31, 2013.
The problem was discovered by FSIS inspection personnel during routine label verification and may have occurred due to a printing error.
FSIS routinely conducts recall effectiveness checks to verify that recalling firms notify their customers of the recall and that steps are taken to make certain that recalled product is no longer available to consumers.
Consumers and members of the media who have questions about the recall can contact Kelly Korleski, Mary Ann’s Plant Manager, at (515) 832-4740.

Spicy Chicken in Peanut Sauce With Noodles
This is my families favorite dish. Easy, healthy, and fast to make - you can use any type of meat, fish or seafood or firm tofu. Fool around with the quantities and ingredients till you get exactly what you want. You can use coconut milk, tomato sauce, or plain yogurt (with yogurt avoid vinegar and/or citrus juice). I use too little pepper and soya and let people add them at the table. You can garnish with peanuts, cashews, and/or green onions.

Black Widows Found in Supermarket Grapes in Several States
Supermarket chain Aldi pulled its entire stock of grapes from Milwaukee, WI, stores earlier this month after a shopper found a live black widow spider in a container of red grapes purchased from Aldi’s Wauwatosa, WI, store.
Similar occurrences have happened in recent months in Michigan, Missouri and Minnesota.
The Michigan incident happened just days prior to the one in Wisconsin, with a family finding the live spider in a bag of red grapes after taking it home from a Kroger store in Brighton, MI.
Two more black widows were found in containers of red grapes at an Aldi store in St. Louis in early October. In September, a black widow was reportedly found in a shipment of grapes at a Maplewood, MN, school.
Aldi has said it will implement additional inspection procedures at its warehouses and stores in hopes of preventing any further problems.
In the early 2000s, three customers complained of finding black widow spiders in their grapes purchased from Tesco supermarkets in the United Kingdom. The grape grower said it had begun using spiders on their vines as an alternative to pesticides.
The black widow is the most venomous spider in North America, though it only kills around 1 percent of those it bites. Small children and the elderly are most susceptible to the black widow’s venom.
Those who encounter a black widow are advised not to handle it, but instead capture it in a container and set it free outside. While the spiders are not aggressive, they will bite in self-defense.
The spiders are most easily identifiable by their long, shiny black legs and a reddish hourglass mark on their abdomens.
Symptoms of black widow bites may include nausea, muscle aches and difficulty breathing. Anyone who suspects they have been bitten by a black widow is advised to apply ice to the bite and seek medical attention to receive anti-venom.

Asian Chicken Nuggets
I had these at a chinese buffet and they were really good! I found this recipe on the smokey wok website and am putting it here for safekeeping. "It's time for some home-made nuggets! These chicken nuggets are extremely versatile and can be served as hors d'oeuvre, part of a main dinner or simply as snacks. I call these nuggets Asian as I used Asian seasoning for the marinade while the ginger and the green onions in the batter completed the Asian flavours. Although I am not a huge fan of fried foods, these nuggets suit me a little better as the batter is lighter in that corn flour and egg whites are used. The finely chopped green onions and minced ginger in the batter provide extra fragrance to every crispy bite too. I served these with rice, but these also taste great served atop soupy noodles."

Miscues With Inspectors Led to Small Poultry Recall in Texas
A communications breakdown between Milford, TX-based Fran’s Fryers and USDA’s Food Safety and inspection Service (FSIS) personnel led to a small quantity of raw poultry being processed without inspection.
No illnesses have been reported but Fran’s has opted to recall 251 pounds of various raw poultry products that was produced before the problem was resolved. Subjects of the recall include:
- 2-lb. packages of “Boneless Dark 2# Chicken Leg Meat”
- 2-lb. and 5-lb. packages of “Chicken Breast Tenders”
- 3-lb. and 5-lb. packages of “Chicken Bone In Breast”
- 5-lb. package of “Ground Turkey 5#”
- 5-lb. packages of “Cut Up Fryer”
- 5-lb. packages of “Whole Fryers”
Each package bears the establishment number “P 20784″ inside the USDA mark of inspection. The products were produced on November 11, 2013, and shipped to retail establishments in Texas. A list of those retailers will be added to the FSIS website shortly.
Raw poultry should be handled carefully and cooked to an internal temperature of at least 165 degrees.

CA Firm Recalls Chicken Sausages for Undeclared MSG, Misbranding
The following product is subject to recall:
- Individual “Chinese Style Chicken Sausage.”
The products were produced June 12, Aug. 14, Sept. 4, and Oct. 24, 2013, and were sold at a single San Francisco retail location. The products have a shelf life of one year. Some consumers may refrigerate, continue to air dry or freeze them.
The problem was discovered by FSIS during a label verification activity. The problem occurred when the company changed the product’s formulation to include MSG, but neglected to list the ingredient on the label.
FSIS and the company have received no reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products. Anyone concerned about a reaction should contact a healthcare provider.
FSIS routinely conducts recall effectiveness checks to verify recalling firms notify their customers of the recall and to ensure that steps are taken to make certain that the product is no longer available to consumers.
Media and consumers with questions about the recall should contact the company’s chief operating officer, Cynthia Wong, at (510) 351-1988.

Tu Dou Si (Chinese Style Potatoes)
This is a potato dish I learned to make while living in Beijing. Initially I couldn't figure out what I was eating and was so surprised to learn it was potato. It's a delight to be able to recreate this in my own kitchen now. Buttery tasting (yet almost completely fat free) potato sticks are soaked in vinegar to soften then briefly tossed on high heat with chilis (or green peppers) and garlic for a deliciously tender finish that brings a unique twist to this familiar root vegetable. Make as much or as little as you - adjust amounts to be appropriate for your pan size and family size. About a 3:1 ratio on potatoes:peppers. Garlic and salt to taste. The soaking solution will also be proportionate, but again about 1 cup water to 1/4 cup vinegar, or 4:1 ratio water:vinegar. *Note: Use a pepper that you like the taste of - I like the long curly green ones sold at asian markets. If you want it spicier, use a spicier pepper. If you don't like spicy, use green bell pepper.
