Asian Shrimp Salad With Snow Peas

From "Jane Brody's Good Seafood Book", 1994. Great as an appetizer, light main course, or on a picnic. I prefer sugar snap peas to snow peas; sugar snaps are ready after 30 seconds of steaming. Makes 3 main-dish servings or 6 appetizer servings.

Canadian Firm Recalls Stir-Fry Vegetables for Listeria

Canadian firm Sobeys, Inc., is recalling Compliments brand Stir-Fry Style Vegetables sold in Ontario from the marketplace due to possible Listeria contamination.

Consumers should not consume 12-oz. Stir-Fry Style Vegetables with a Best Before 14 JA 21 date and a UPC of 0 68820 10648 7, according to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, which issued the notice on Sunday.

Check to see if you have recalled product in your home. Recalled products should be thrown out or returned to the store where they were purchased. There have been no reported illnesses associated with consumption of this product.

Food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes may not look or smell spoiled but can still make you sick. Symptoms can include vomiting, nausea, persistent fever, muscle aches, severe headache and neck stiffness. Pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk. Although infected pregnant women may experience only mild, flu-like symptoms, the infection can lead to premature delivery, infection of the newborn or even stillbirth. In severe cases of illness, people may die.

This recall was triggered by Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) test results. CFIA is conducting a food safety investigation, which may lead to the recall of other products. If other high-risk products are recalled, CFIA will notify the public through updated Food Recall Warnings.

Cat Food Recalled Due to Possible Salmonella Contamination

PMI Nutrition, LLC, of Arden Hills, MN, has initiated a voluntary recall of its 20-lb. bags of Red Flannel® Cat Formula cat food for possible Salmonella contamination, according to a U.S. Food and Drug Administration announcement issued Saturday.

There have been no reports of illness related to this product to date. This recall is being issued out of an abundance of caution after routine testing by the FDA’s Detroit District Office identified possible Salmonella contamination.

Salmonella can affect animals eating the products, and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products.

Healthy people infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers.

Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.

Red Flannel® Cat Food was manufactured by a third-party manufacturer for PMI. The product was sold through dealers to customers distributed in the following states: Alabama, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, North Carolina, North Dakota, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, Vermont, Wisconsin and West Virginia.

The lot number is printed on the lower back side of the bag in a white box on the right-hand side. The lot number will be preceded by a time stamp that will be unique to each bag (example: 14:32). The lot number and best-by date impacted by this recall are as follows: Best by 05 06 14 096 13 SM L2 1A (lot number). The UPC code for the recalled product is: 7 42869 00058 5. No other products/lot numbers are affected by this recall.

Customers should immediately discontinue use of the impacted product and return it to their dealer for a full refund or replacement. FDA will continue to work with impacted dealers and distributors to trace the bags.

For more information on the recall, customers can contact the customer service line for PMI products at 1-800-332-4738. Customer service representatives will be available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. CST.

State Tests Find Listeria Contamination in Raw Milk From South Dakota Dairy Farm

Bottled raw milk from Jerseydale Farms near Brookings has tested positive for Listeria, according to the South Dakota Department of Agriculture.

The contaminated bottled raw milk was sold in the Brookings area, which includes the South Dakota State University campus. Anyone who purchased the bottled raw milk should immediately discarded or returned the product, the department said.

State bottled raw milk rules in South Dakota require permits for dairies selling raw milk directly to consumers. Inspections are required at least annually depending on grade of milk and dairies must also submit samples monthly for bacteria and residue testing.

The unpasteurized bottled milk purchased in recent days from Jerseydale Farms may contain the potentially deadly bacteria.

Listeria can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, especially in young children, the elderly and individuals with weakened immune systems, the South Dakota Department of Health said. Listeria infection can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

Symptoms of listeriosis include fever, muscle aches and sometimes nausea or diarrhea. If infection spreads to the nervous system, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance or convulsions can occur.

Agriculture is South Dakota’s No. 1 industry, generating over $21 billion in annual economic activity and employing more than 122,000 South Dakotans.

Ham Recalled Due to Listeria Contamination

Gusto Packing, a Montgomery, Ill. establishment, is recalling approximately 67,113 pounds of sliced, spiral ham products due to concerns about possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today.

The hams were shipped to wholesalers for further distribution in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio, while some were exported to Canada. The following products are subject to recall:

45.5-lb. cases, with six individual sized hams each labeled “Centrella Signature, Hardwood Hickory Smoked, Spiral Sliced Ham with Natural Juices” with the case code “71292603304,” packaged on Nov. 29, 2013, having a Use or Freeze by date of “02/06/14.”

45.8-lb. cases, with six individual sized hams each labeled “AMISH VALLEY, Fully Cooked, Hickory Smoked Spiral Sliced Ham” with the case code “71292645104,” packaged on Nov.

30, 2013, having a Use or Freeze by date of “02/06/14.”

31.6-lb. cases, with four individual sized hams each labeled “Ripple Creek Farms, Fully Cooked, Ready To Eat, Hickory Smoked, Spiral Sliced Ham” with the case code “71292603312,” packaged on Nov. 30, 2013, having a Best Before date of “2014 FE 13.”

Packaging labels bear the establishment number “EST. 2516” inside the USDA mark of inspection.

The problem was discovered when Gusto Packing’s internal sampling program found some of its products tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes. Those products were frozen and held for reconditioning. Later, Gusto Packing found that some of those ham products inadvertently shipped into commerce. The company then informed FSIS.

Salmonella Heidelberg Cases From 2013 Might Be Linked to Tennessee Outbreak

The Salmonella Heidelberg outbreak at a Tennessee prison that has sent two of the nine infected inmates to the hospital is a subject of a new report pointing to a larger investigation from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta.

CDC says the outbreak associated with 33,840 pounds of mechanically separated chicken recalled on Jan. 10 by Tyson Foods Inc. is being investigated by the agency’s National Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring System (NARMS) laboratory.

The NARMS lab is currently conducting antibiotic resistance testing on clinical isolates collected from the sickened prisoners who are infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Heidelberg. NARMS is a public health surveillance system for the U.S. that tracks antimicrobial resistance in foodborne and other enteric bacteria found in people, raw meat and poultry and food-producing animals.

Results of NARMS testing in the Salmonella Heidelberg outbreak will be reported when completed, according to CDC.

State and federal investigators have concluded the Tyson brand mechanically separated chicken is the likely source of the Salmonella Heidelberg outbreak. The strain is one that is commonly reported to PulseNet, and 19 other people in 12 states were reported to have it in late 2013 with onset dates between Oct. 22 and Dec. 15.

Four to eight cases of this strain are reported to PulseNet each month.

CDC says more investigation is required to determine if those cases are related to those in Tennessee. These cases are not related, according to CDC, to the mutlti-drug resistant Salmonella Heidelberg infections linked to Foster Farms brand chicken.

Raw poultry products often are contaminated with Salmonella bacteria.

Vegetarian Patties (Ganmodoki)

From Elizabeth Andoh's classic "At Home With Japanese Cooking". The patties are delicious freshly fried and garnished with some grated radish or ginger and a tiny bit of soy sauce, or even more delicious simmered in seasoned stock. Use whatever vegetables you have: carrot, burdock root, lotus root, shiitake or other mushrooms, boiled bamboo shoots, or whatever you can think up. Fried patties may be frozen for up to 1 month, or stored in an airtight container in the fridge for 3 or 4 days. Serve as a side dish with rice, miso soup and a salad. Prep time does not include pressing tofu. For vegan version, substitute 2-3 tsp. glutinous yam (yama imo), peeled and grated, for the egg white.

Pakoras are popular across Pakistan, where they generally resemble those found in India. They are sometimes served in a yoghurt based curry (salan), as a main dish, pakora kari, rather than as separate snacks. In this case the pakoras are generally doughier and are made of chopped potato, onion and chili mixed into the batter, instead of individual fried vegetable slices.
