TX Firm Recalls Salted Fish for Possible Botulism Contamination

Lao Thai Nam Corp. of Dallas, TX, has recalled Number One Sompa Salted Fish because it may be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum, a bacterium that can cause life-threatening illness or death. Consumers are warned not to use the product even if it does not look or smell spoiled.

Number One Sompa Salted Fish was distributed in the Irving and Houston areas through retail stores prior to 03/31/2014.

Number One Sompa Salted Fish is contained in a clear vacuum-packaged pouch. The pouch contains red-and-black lettering with a fish logo on the left-hand portion. The product is a 7-ounce package containing a whole processed Tin Foil Barb fish, UPC: 8 8433200019 4.

No illnesses have been reported to date. Consumers who have purchased 7-ounce Number One Sompa Salted Fish are urged to return it to the place of purchase.

The potential for contamination was noted after a routine FDA inspection found that the process for the fish being manufactured was not correctly validated.

Consumers with questions may contact the company at (469) 213-8718, Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., CDT.

Botulism, a potentially fatal form of food poisoning, can cause the following symptoms: general weakness, dizziness, double vision and trouble speaking or swallowing. Difficulty breathing, weakness in other muscles, abdominal distension and constipation may also be common symptoms. People experiencing these problems should seek immediate medical attention.

Fresh Express Recalls Italian Salad for Potential Listeria Risk

Fresh Express Inc. has issued a recall of a limited number of cases of 10-oz. and 6-oz. Italian Salad with the already expired Use-by Date of March 26 and a Product Code of H071A11A due to a possible health risk from Listeria monocytogenes.

No illnesses have been reported in association with the recall, and no other Fresh Express products are being recalled.

The company is confirming with retailers that the expired product has already been removed from store shelves and inventories in accordance with its strict procedures for products that have reached their expiration date.

Only Fresh Express Italian Salad with the specific Product Code of H071A11A and March 26 Use-by Date is included in the recall. Consumers who have the recalled product should discard it. Consumers with questions may call Fresh Express at (800) 242-5472 during the hours of 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. EDT.

Listeria monocytogenes is an organism that can cause foodborne illness in a person who eats a food item contaminated with it. Symptoms of infection may include fever, muscle aches, gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea or diarrhea. The illness primarily impacts pregnant women and adults with weakened immune systems. Most healthy adults and children rarely become seriously ill.

Although the product was already expired and no illnesses were reported, the company elected to issue a recall as a precaution when it learned a single sample in a random test had yielded a positive result for Listeria monocytogenes. Fresh Express is coordinating closely with regulatory officials.

The recalled salad was distributed in limited quantities to predominantly Eastern and Mid-Atlantic states.

Fresh Express Italian Salad being recalled displays a Use-by Date of March 26, 2014 with a Product Code of H071A11A in the upper right-hand side of the package.

USDA warns public about egg products that may be unfit for consumption

The U.S. Dept. of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (USDA FSIS) is issuing a public health alert because Nutriom LLC, Lacey, Wash., declined to expand its Feb. 15, 2014, recall to include an additional 118,541 lbs of processed egg products for which there is reason to conclude that they are unfit for human consumption.

FSIS Issues Public Health Alert After WA Firm Declines to Expand Recall of Processed Egg Products

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) issued a public health alert on Wednesday because Nutriom LLC of Lacey, WA declined to expand its Feb. 15, 2014, recall to include an additional 118,541 pounds of processed egg products for which there is reason to conclude that they are unfit for human consumption.

The request for expansion was based on evidence collected during an ongoing investigation conducted by FSIS at the establishment. The company has refused to recall the additional processed egg products. As a consequence, FSIS intends to take appropriate action to remove the products from commerce.

FSIS issued the original recall because the company allegedly recorded false laboratory results. The company allegedly produced negative laboratory results for Salmonella when the results were actually positive, or reported that sampling had occurred when, in fact, no microbial testing was performed.

FSIS requested the company to include additional products, but it declined. Because the product was not produced in accordance with FSIS requirements, it is unfit for human consumption.

The following products were shipped to co-packers for incorporation into consumer-size packages:

  • 3,884-lb. super sack of “OvaEasy Plain Whole Egg” with the lot code “H0613-B”

  • 1,031-lb. super sack of “OvaEasy Plain Whole Egg” with the lot code “I0413-A”

  • 958-lb. super sack of “OvaEasy Plain Whole Egg” with the lot code “I0413-A”

  • 4,422-lb. super sack of “OvaEasy Plain Whole Egg” with the lot code “L1713-A”

The following products were packaged in consumer-sized packages:

  • 1.75-lb. packs of “OvaEasy Plain Whole Egg” with the Julian dates “0374,” “0384,” “2683” and “2693”

  • 66-gram spray bottles of “Bak-Klene Egg Wash” with the lot code “L1013A”

  • 1.17-lb. packs of “OvaEasy UGRA, Reduced Cholesterol” with the Julian dates “3129,” “3228,” “3229,” “3230,” “3231,” “3281,” “3282,” “3283,” “3284,” “3337,” “3338,” “3339” and “3340”

  • 4.5-oz. cans of “OvaEasy Whole Plain Egg” with the Julian date “2883”

  • 571-gram packs of “Vitovo Low Fat” with the Julian date “3193”

  • 1.1-lb. bags of “OvaEasy Boil-in-Bag UGR, Heat & Serve (HS)” with the Julian dates “3161,” “3162,” “3182,” “3183,” “3188,” “3201,” “3202,” “3203,” “3204,” “3205,” “3208,” “3209,” “3210,” “3211,” “3212,” “3213,” “3220,” “3221” and “3222”

  • 2-oz. packs of “OvaEasy Plain Whole Egg” with the Julian dates “0074,” “0084,” “0094,” “0354,” “0364,” “0374,” “2243,” “2253,” “2953,” “2963,” “3463,” “3473” and “3483”

  • 66-gram spray bottles of “Panera Egg Wash” with the Julian dates “0104,” “0154,” “0164,” “0174,” “0214,” “0224,” “0234,” “0244,” “0284,” “0294,” “0304” and “0314”

  • 2-oz. pack of “Wise Company, Wise Blend” with the Julian date “0943”

On Feb. 15, 2014, the company recalled 226,710 pounds of processed egg products. To read that recall release, click here.

The dried egg products were produced from May 2013 through January 2014 and bear the establishment number “INSPECTED EGG PRODUCTS PLANT 21493G” inside the USDA Mark of Inspection. These products were shipped nationwide and to U.S. military installations in the United States and abroad, and to Mexico.

FSIS inspects egg products under the Egg Products Inspection Act. FDA typically takes jurisdiction of egg products after they leave the egg facility if they are incorporated into FDA-regulated products. In this case, USDA handled the original recall rather than FDA because the products are in consumer packages with an identifiable USDA Mark of Inspection, and FSIS had jurisdiction over the product when the contamination occurred.

FSIS advises all consumers to safely prepare and consume egg products that have been cooked to a temperature of 160 degrees F. The only way to confirm that egg products are cooked to a temperature high enough to kill harmful bacteria is to use a food thermometer that measures internal temperature.

FDA Suspends Registration of Cheese Manufacturer Over Health Risk

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Thursday suspended the food facility registration of Roos Food Inc., the maker of cheese and sour cream that has caused an outbreak of Listeria in Maryland and California that includes on death.

The registration was suspended after FDA determined there was still a reasonable probability that food manufactured by Roos could pose a public health threat.

Without a registration, Roos will be unable to ship food to retailers or sell any products.

The FDA inspected the company’s facility between Feb. 18 and March 4, finding a number of “insanitary conditions,” including a roof leaking so badly that water was raining down onto equipment and storage tanks in the cheese processing room. Inspectors also found standing water in processing rooms, metal roofs with flaking rust, and food residue left over on equipment after cleaning had been performed.

The suspension will be lifted when Roos Foods can demonstrate that the conditions at its facility no longer have a “reasonable probability” of threatening public health.

The Roos Foods Listeria outbreak has been connected to seven hospitalizations in Maryland and one death in California. Five of the illnesses involved a pregnancy: two sickened mother-newborn pairs and an additional sickened newborn.

The company previously recalled all lots of the following cheese products:

  • Mexicana:

    • Cuajada En Terron

    • Cuajada/Cuajadita Cacera

    • Cuajada Fresca

    • Queso Fresca Round

    • Queso Dura Viejo Hard Cheeses

  • Amigo:

    • Cuajada En Terron

    • Cuajada/Cuajadita Cacera

    • Cuajada Fresca

    • Queso Fresca Round

    • Queso Dura Viejo Hard Cheeses;

  • Santa Rosa De Lima:

    • Cuajada En Terron

    • Cuajada/Cuajadita Cacera

    • Cuajada Fresca

    • Queso Fresca Round

    • Queso Dura Viejo Hard Cheeses

  • Anita Queso Fresco

The company has also recalled its Crema Pura Mexicana Cultured Sour Cream.

The products are packaged in flexible plastic bags and rigid plastic clam shell packages in 12 oz. and 16 oz. sizes under the brand names: Mexicana, Amigo, Santa Rosa De Lima, and Anita. They were distributed in Maryland, Virginia and Washington D.C through retail stores.

‘Cancer Eye’ a Common Reason for USDA Condemnations

If media reports prove to be true, the U.S. Department of Agriculture shut down the Rancho Feeding slaughterhouse in northern California because the facility was processing cows with eye cancer. The official reason was because Rancho had “processed diseased and unsound animals.”

What happened at Rancho is the subject of an ongoing investigation by USDA’s Inspector General (IG) and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for Northern California. This past Friday, Daniel Engeljohn, who oversees field operations for USDA’s Food Service and Inspection Service (FSIS), met with area ranchers and congressional staff.

Engeljohn reportedly said the investigation is going to take at least several more weeks, and that Rancho engaged in “very deceptive practices.”

Ranchers who used Rancho for custom processing services are keeping pressure on USDA to remove their meat from the recall involving almost 9 million pounds of beef distributed commercially to at least 6,300 retail outlets.

Dr. Mark Anderson, a University of California-Davis expert in diagnostic pathology, often sees cow eye cancer in biopsies as he looks through his Center for Food Animal Health microscope at the School of Veterinary Medicine.

Anderson says the problem is “very common” and is affected by the age of the animal and how often it has been exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light. Since UV light is found in sunlight, too much UV light can be absorbed and damage eye structures, including the cornea, lens, and retina.

Epithelioma is commonly called “cancer eye,” says Dr. William James, USDA’s former chief veterinarian. “In cattle, it most often involves the un-pigmented (white) skin around the eye of older Holsteins. Maybe 1 to 2 percent of the older Holsteins have it at slaughter.”

James told Food Safety News that if the tumor has spread to the extent that it has destroyed the eye, the animal is condemned on ante-mortem (before slaughter) inspection.

“If the tumor is relatively small, the animal is tagged a ‘suspect’ and is slaughtered,” he said. “The PHV (Public Health Veterinarian) inspects it at post-mortem.”

“If there has been significant spread around the eye (visible after removal of skin), or if there has been metastasis to the lymph nodes of the head, the entire animal is condemned — head, carcass, viscera,” James explained. “If the tumor is localized, the head is condemned and the carcass and viscera passed, assuming no other condemnable diseases or conditions (are found).”

James said if the epithelioma has spread or metastasized, condemnation is required by FSIS because of the generalized diseased condition.

“It is not a food safety concern, he said.

The Jan. 14 suspension letter FSIS sent to Rancho alleges that the company sold cattle “likely affected with epithelioma of the eye.” Apparently two cattle heads with “cancer eye” were without incisions for the four pair of lymph nodes that would exist if a post-mortem inspection had occurred.

There seem to be questions whether Rancho might have been getting around the system that routinely identifies and removes diseased cattle before they can get into the human food supply. In fact, epithelioma is among the major reasons for condemnations that are part of the job for USDA meat inspectors. Every month, they condemn about 20,000 head of cattle at the slaughterhouse.

A recent College of Veterinary Medicine report from Washington State University puts epithelioma among the top four reasons for condemnation. WSU also had this advice for livestock owners:

“Cancer eye condemnation can also be reduced by an early detection and treatment program, by selecting breeding stock with dark pigmentation or color around the eye, checking eyes whenever cattle are gathered for other routine procedures, treating or rechecking cattle with early lesions every two to six months, and sorting cattle with lesions for veterinary evaluation and treatment,” the WSU report said.

Options for treatment include surgery, cryosurgery (freezing), hyperthermia (heating), or some combination.

Plum Organics Children’s Products Recalled for Choking Hazard

Plum Organics is once again voluntarily recalling children’s food products — this time a “limited quantity” of two varieties of its World Baby line of pouch products due to intermittent damage to the plastic spouts during manufacturing.

The company previously issued in a high-profile recall in November 2013 due to spoilage concerns.

There is a possibility that small fragments in the latest recall could loosen, detach and present a choking hazard if the product is consumed. These products should not be given to children.

Plum has received approximately 14 consumer complaints about damaged spouts, though no injuries have been reported to date. Out of an abundance of caution, Plum is removing all affected pouches from the marketplace, the company said.

The recalled products include World Baby Italy and World Baby Thailand varieties and can be identified by the following “Best By” dates on the package:

  • World Baby Italy–Zucchini & Spinach with Pasta Marinara with “Best By” date of 09Sep14 (Sept. 9, 2014).

  • World Baby Thailand–Roasted Pumpkin & Coconut Rice with “Best By” date of 10Sep14 (Sept. 10, 2014).

Approximately 12,000 cases of the recalled products were shipped nationwide to grocery, mass and online retailers in the United States. No other Plum products are affected by this recall.

The company announced the recall after discovering damage to the top rim of the spout in some pouches. The damage should be plainly visible as a depression in the rim, possibly with a fragment of plastic attached to the damaged area.
